Three Men in a Boat Essay Example for Free

Three Men in a Boat Essay British humor is often hard to grasp for Indians, with their references and rambling. But Jerome K. Jeromehits the nail on the head with ‘Three Men In A Boat‘ and brings out British absurdities and traditions in a comic way. This book though meant to be a travelogue of sorts ended up, inexplicable as one of the most loved funny stories of all time. And even after 100+ years since publishing, the jokes remain fresh and witty! It outlines the story of three men – Jerome and his two friends, Harris and George and their dog, a fox terrier called Montmorency on their holiday on the River Thames in Oxford, England as the three men suffer from some weird ailment. So they set themselves off on a trip to cure themselves – a boating trip. Apparently, that was quite common in those times, which is around 1889 when the book was published. The travelogue portion is quite apparent as along the trip, Jerome mentions all the villages and landmarks they pass, such as Hampton Court Palace, Hampton Church, Monkey Island, Magna Carta Island, Marlow etc and the few titbits about the culture in those places. But this, though intended to be the main part of the book was overshadowed by the comic instances that cropped up and the book gave up and now is just a humorous tale. Jerome often digresses and starts off random anecdotes and ponders upon life. From friends to friends-of-friends to historic characters, Jerome’s detours truly know no bounds. He gives up brilliant character sketches of not only Harris and George, but of Montmorency also. From how his Aunt Podger used to take a week long refuge at her mother’s place when Uncle Podger donned the role of a handyman trying to fix â€Å"little† things in the house to how the making of Irish Stew from all the leftovers compelled Montmorency to add his bit by bringing a dead-water rat, each episode will leave you giggling in delight. And the best is that it describes the common frustrations of life that you and I go through. The downside of the book is that the return journey back up the Thames is wrapped up in just one chapter which leaves you slightly hurt and bewildered at the sudden ending. But the wry and sarcastic humour and wit with the misadventures, exaggerations, mad caps, twists and sheer silliness in this P. G Wodehouse-y book leaves you pleasantly happy at the end. Of course, one can’t help but read this book in a proper British accent. Be it in their heads, or out loud. And that would be perfectly fine.

Eastern Cougars, Maybe :: Animals Cougars Cougar Papers

Eastern Cougars, Maybe (1) Most Field and Stream enthusiasts know that cougars are a fast and agile animal that can live for many years with no real predator other than humans. Another name for the cougar is the well used mountain lion which many Eastern states have named stores, schools, and even sports teams after. The distinction that the Mississippi river stops cougars from traveling into Eastern states can’t be proven because there are many animals in the West that are in the East. In Craig Springer’s "A Rumor of Cougar" article posted in the Field and Stream magazine depicts falsehood due to three interesting fallacies, a fallacy of distraction and two causal fallacies. [SS-1] (2) One of Professor Downes’ fallacies of distraction is linked to Craig Springer’s article in several aspects. The fallacy, argument from ignorance states that, "Arguments of this form assume that since something has not been proven true, it is therefore false." An example of this type of fallacy is seen in the first sentence of the article, "Cougars in the East are the equivalent of UFO,s,"says Mark Dowling. This statement is suggesting that there are no cougars in the East because they haven’t been identified. There may be actual cougars roaming the East even though there is no specific proof. Then again, there is no specific proof that there are not cougars in the East. Therefore, this statement is just an argument of ignorance from Mark Dowling’s point of view. (3) The article also contains two causal fallacies, a fallacy of complex cause and a fallacy of genuine but insignificant cause. According to Downes the fallacy of complex cause states that, "The effect is caused by a number of objects or events of which the cause identified is only a part." The article suggests this in the sentence, "People say they’ve seen cougars in the East, but there is no concrete evidence" - "meaning no DNA, no skeletal remains." Concrete evidence can be more than DNA or skeletal remains. For one reason, it would be hard to find any DNA or Skeletal remains because there is no real Eastern predator to kill a cougar. Plus, cougars have many animals to feed on in the Eastern states so it would take awhile for a cougar to die. Cougars live in secluded areas, if one would happen to die it would most likely be eaten by scavengers before any human could identify it and get a sample of DNA.

The CFO of Flash Memory, Inc. Essay

The CFO of Flash Memory, Inc. prepares the company’s investing and financing plans for the next three years. Flash Memory is a small firm that specializes in the design and manufacture of solid state drives (SSDs) and memory modules for the computer and electronics industries. The company invests aggressively in research and development of new products to stay ahead of the competition. Increased working capital requirements force the CFO to consider alternatives for additional financing. In addition, he must also consider an investment opportunity in a new product line that has the potential to be extremely profitable. Students must prepare financial forecasts, calculate the weighted average cost of capital (WACC), estimate cash flows, and evaluate financing alternatives. This case is especially recommended as a final exam case for a standard MBA-level course in corporate finance. Subjects Include: Capital Budgeting, Cash Flows, Financial Forecasting, Long Term Financing, Net Present Value (NPV), and Weighted Average Cost of Capital (WACC) For the Flash Memory Inc. case you will turn in both a write-up of your analysis and a spreadsheet that contains any financials or calculations you performed. The formal write-up should contain an overview of how you tackled specific issues presented in the case, how you set up the spreadsheet to present you analysis, and a discussion of any assumptions you are making. To guide you through the case, below are a set of questions you will need to address. Structure your written analysis and spreadsheet solutions around these questions. 1.Assuming the company does not invest in the new product line prepare forecasted income statements and balance sheets at year-end 2010, 2011, and 2012. Based on these forecasts, estimate Flash’s required external financing. Assume any external financing takes the form of additional notes payable from its commercial bank. Can Flash fund the continued growth and meet the borrowing requirements established by the bank? If not what are some potential alternatives? 2.Evaluate whether Flash Memory should invest in the new product line discussed on page 4 of the case. a.Any decision to invest in the new product line will require an estimate of the discount rate (i.e., WACC). When estimating a WACC you should be clear on the inputs you used to calculate the cost of equity, cost of debt, and the relative weights of equity and debt. For this analysis use  the target debt-to-equity ratio that is sought by the board of directors. 3.Estimate the pro-forma financial statements (i.e., income statement and balance sheet) for the years 2010, 2011, and 2012 assuming that Flash takes the new investment project and finances the project with debt. What issues might arise if Flash only uses debt financing? If debt financing turns out to have problems what are Flash’s alternatives? As sales of Flash Memory Inc. (Flash) increases rapidly in the first few months of 2010, additional working capital is required to ensure smooth operations and maintain their current growth rate. However, Flash currently has almost reached its notes payable limit of 70% accounts receivables with its current commercial bank and thus, need to look for various alternative financing means to provide the required amount of funds it needs to finance its forecasted sales for year 2010 onwards. This report is written to provide an insight to Flash’s financial position for the following 3 years (2010 till 2012) through the use of pro-forma income statement and balance sheet. For Flash to be able to keep up with the sales projections, additional financing of $4.04million and $2.61million are required in 2010 and 2011. In addition, Flash is also considering investing in a major new product line and a valuation analysis is done to determine whether the new product line should be invested or not. According to the various sales and expenses projection, a valuation analysis has shown that the new product line will be valued at a favorable NPV of approximately $2.8 Million using Flash’s weighted cost of capital as the discount rate. As such, in the event that the new product line is invested, additional financing will be required to initiate and maintain this product line in 2010, which amounts to S7.48 Million. Lastly, this report also provides an evaluation on various alternative financing methods that Flash can consider to obtain the additional funds needed to finance its forecasted sales of its existing and new product lines. These methods are: (1) Finance with Internal Financing, (2) Short Term Debt, (3) Long Term Debt and (4) Equity issuance. The recommended form of financing that Flash sho uld seek is to finance its operations according to the Pecking Order Theory,

Why did the global financial system meltdown in 2008 Essay

Why did the global financial system meltdown in 2008 - Essay Example The increase in the number of bad loans led to devaluation of company assets and the benchmark indices plunged as a result of the erosion of investor confidence. This effect spread across other economies of the world. The national production levels, imports and exports lowered which gave rise to reduction of consumption demand. The fall of consumption in the economy again pulled down the productivity levels thereby forming a vicious circle which prompted appropriate actions from policymakers for economic recovery. Overview and key rational concepts:Â  global financial system meltdown and relevant issues of world economy The global financial meltdown that occurred in 2008 had its root in the economic crisis in US. The economic crisis in US started with the crisis in the housing markets of US. The prices of the housing market were steadily increasing during the middle period of the 1980s to 1990s. The investments in the housing market were lucrative as the investors in real estate and housing properties could realize multiple values of their initial investments within a short period of time. The investment funds were borrowed from the banks and financial institutions. The banks and the financial institutions also observed that their loans could earn them interest repayments in short time and the underlying mortgage properties were also of high value in the market. In the plight of higher growth in short span of time, the financial institutions lacked due diligence while assessing the credit parameters of the borrowers. The policies of the US government also influenced such activities in the market as every citizen of US had a fundamental right of holding housing property. This phenomenon led to the formation of a housing bubble. Due to lack of tighter credit policies, the income level of the borrowers and their past credit history were not fully checked. This caused the housing bubble to burst when the borrowers at one point of time were not able to repay the lo ans. The crisis situation occurred when the weight of bad loans increased beyond proportions (Kates, 2011). The financial institutions and the corporate houses which held the housing properties as underlying mortgages incurred heavy losses as a result of the bad investments. The share prices of the companies including big names like the Lehmann Brothers fell and the shareholders’ wealth was eroded in quick time. This led to a huge crisis in the economy of US that created the financial recession in 2008. The economic crisis in US is also referred to as the subprime crisis. The losses that occurred in the housing market is referred to as subprime because this market had a relatively lesser adherence to credit parameters for lending and included borrowers who could not avail loans from the prime house lending market. The economic crisis slowly and gradually spread to other economies as well and the global financial system was hit by the economic crisis (Allen, 1999). This was th e age of economic reforms by developing countries like China, India which led to its integration with the world trade. The international economy was heavily dependent on the exports and imports of the countries all over the world like US, UK, Canada, countries of the European Union, Middle East, China, India, etc. The economic crisis in US led to the fall of consumption demand and productivity in the economy. As a result of this, the exports and imports of the country hampered which in turn affected the imports and exports of other countries all over the globe. Thus the effect of economic crisis melted down to the economies as well
